Clock-Sketch Lessons
Hey all. Been meaning to overhaul Clock-Sketch, as over the past two years I’ve steadily gained close to 1500 subscribers. I figure it is worth building off of and improving, so stay tuned for updates on that front. For now I’ve gone ahead and uploaded three real-time “lessons” where the viewer can watch me draw the gestures in real-time. I figure this might be useful to some struggling with the idea of gesture drawing or if they feel their artwork doesn’t muster up. I know I was very self-conscious about speed drawings when I first started and know it can be kind of nerve-racking when things aren’t working for you in such a short amount of time. I draw straightforward and don’t erase, keep my mistakes visible, and post them shamelessly. Gestures are all about doing warmup exercises and so this is very important for beginning your day of drawing or trying to learn the style of a new character. You will notice towards the end of some of these sketches I move extremely fast. This is because I’ve gotten down the design of the character I’m drawing and begin to migrate away from even looking at the photo. When this happens you know you’re in a good place to start creating original work with that same character. But enough talking, more drawing! Please enjoy:
Baseball Poses
Some clock work to keep in practice. Possible client wanted me to work on baseball poses, primarily a pitcher’s extreme poses. I didn’t make a Clock-Sketch video for these, but rather just did them on my own. Enjoy.

More sketching from my Clock-Sketch channel. Good poses here, I think I did most of them justice in the time frame I had. My favorites would be the top left and middle right underwater poses. So much fun! I love drawing characters in these exciting poses. It’s especially great to have underwater reference photos! I hope you enjoy. Feel free to give me constructive criticism on these quick little drawings!
As for today, I have a figure drawing FINAL in the mid-afternoon. I’ll be doing a 3-hour drawing on Bristol Board of either a male or female model…or both! I know the male model is one of my good friends so it’s really exciting. It’s about time I break in these new LYRA drawing pencils I got a few months ago.

I personally feel that these latest Mercenary gestures are the best I’ve done so far. I think I can get this guy down pretty quick. Maybe it’s all the lines in the clothing and props. I understand that it’s not exactly studying the weight and form of the body, but I think they turned out pretty well. As for the female archer, I think I’m getting the form down pretty well in the time limit I’ve set for myself in the Clock-Sketch videos. I think I should stop attempting to do her face in the amount of time I have until I have a decent face to come back to each time like with the Mercenary. Females are harder with such harsh strokes – it’s difficult to bring out the femininity, especially when working so fast. These were worked from my Clock-Sketch channel on YouTube. Clock Sketches Round 3
Click for fullview! I am rather happy with these. I did them yesterday with the pirate videos, but decided to wait to post them. I really enjoyed the cape dynamics and so I spent double the amount of time on the top gesture. It was just too much fun. I’m going to have to make some new videos to sketch from! Please, if you use them, send me your suggestions for poses and props!
Clock Sketches Round 2
So, I did these sketches today with pal Keff, the two pirate videos I had just recently posted. I always seem to do my Clock Sketches with him. It’s a really good exercise a load of fun. What made it even better was that I picked up probably my favorite marker in the entire world to sketch them with. Clock Sketches Round 1
These are some sketches I did awhile ago, using my ClockSketch videos “1-Minute Gestures – Female” and “2.5-Minute Gestures – Female Archer”. I was pretty happy with them. They were good studies. I especially liked how I was able to draw her bow. I’ve always had serious trouble with bows in the past!
Did somebody say pirate?
Here is a couple new videos for Clock Sketch. It involves the new male model in pirate uniform, posing very naturally. I did a second video as well, only this one focuses on foreshortening. There are some great poses in perspective that would be great to use for perspective practice! I hope you will use these and that they will aid you in some way. I have new art to post and I will be doing so the next time I get a chance, but for now, enjoy some more gesture studies!
New Male Model!
I found a new model to support Clock Sketch. The stock duo is fantastic for doing clothing and props. Great for concept art so I made them longer at 3.5 minutes. That allows me to fit 4 poses in one video. So start drawing and enjoy!
Clock Sketch
Seeing that there is hardly any material out there on real-life poses for figure drawing (on the internet), I decided to come up with a solution. Clock Sketch. People need to have timed gesture drawings in order to get better, but no one really uses PoseManiacs. Their poses are old and cliche. They also don’t have props, environments, or anything to really put a character in context. Some of the best gesture work involves a character in costume. It’s like drawing the actual character! We also don’t need to be bothered with color when looking at a pose, so I have created ClockSketch on YouTube. Hopefully, this will work out and will be a good resource for other artists. Basically, I’ll hunt down a good set of stock images from deviantART and other places, maybe even take some of my own, then put them in a timed slideshow with countdowns and everything. Then, the artist will just have to click play on the YouTube video and start sketching. This might help a lot of people. I will add some variation to the videos and have them categorized by the stock photographer. I will also categorize them by male/female as well as how fast the timings go. Here’s an example:
